Get to Know Deuce

Below are questions that a young man asked Deuce for his school project. We felt they were very good questions and that we should share them on this website so that others could learn more about Deuce McAllister ‘off the field’.

Dulymus Jenod McAllister. I received the nickname Deuce from a former coach.

Spaghetti and I also really like Lobster

What was your favorite college team growing up?

What is your favorite flavor of Gatorade?
I don’t really have a favorite. I often drink it during games to replenish my electrolytes. But, if I had to pick a favorite flavor, I’d pick the green flavor – lime.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
A U.S. Marshal. That’s also one of my favorite movies, by the way – U.S. Marshal starring Tommy Lee Jones and Wesley Snipes.

Since you were a Criminal Justice major, did you ever think you might be a lawyer?
No, I really never had aspirations of becoming a lawyer. I was really intrigued by what U.S. Marshals do.

What was your favorite subject in high school?
English

Since you played football, basketball, and ran track, what made you decide football would be “your” sport?
Listening to college coaches and then seeing the height of guys in basketball. I would have had to play point guard but I didn’t have enough ball handling skills to do so. I always loved baseball, but we didn’t have the best HS baseball team so I concentrated on football.

Did you ever quit a team?
Yes, I did, but only because of a conflict of schedule. I try to encourage people not to quit thins once they’ve started, but there are certain circumstances where time just won’t allow us to fit everything in, and something’s got to give.

What advice would you give a kid who wanted to quit a team?
I would first ask him/her what their reasoning is behind quitting. I am against quitting just to quit. However, I wouldn’t want him/her to stay in an uncomfortable situation either. I’d just ask him/her to seriously analyze why they are quitting.

What music is on your i-pod?
A complete mix of everything, but I prefer R&B and Old School

What do you eat for your pre-game meal?
Nothing in particular. Just whatever is around that morning.

Do you have any pre-game rituals?
Yeah, I do. I have a few certain things that I really like to stick to doing. If it’s an away game, then I like to ride the second bus to the stadium. Always, when I get to the stadium, I like to sit in the hot tub before the game. When I get out of the hot tub, I have to take a shower. I can’t just dry off. I have to take a shower. Now, if the stadium doesn’t have a hot tub, then I do the next best thin…I take a nice long hot shower. When I’m done in the hot tub or the shower, I head to the athletic training room to get taped for the game. I always have to have my guy Kevin tape me up on game day. At this point, I’ve got my headphones back on. I like to listen to Gospel music pre-game and every week Kevin will sing this one particular Gospel song while he tapes me. So, on game day there are 3 essential thins I need: My I-Pod and headphones, some time in the hot tub, and Kevin to tape me up and sing this one song.

What is your favorite offensive play?
No doubt, it’s got to be a Power Play…a run up the inside when the guard pulls and my fullback leads. We’ve had a solid offensive line the last two seasons and my fullback Mike Karney is undoubtedly one of the best in the league.

What is your favorite video game?
I don’t really play video games. But, if I had to pick one then I’d probably say Madden.

How do you spend your free time?
On the internet looking at SI.com and my e-mail…playing scrabble…shopping…and hanging out with family and friends

What is the best piece of advice you ever received?
Wow. That’s a good question to which I don’t have a specific answer. I can’t say it has been just one thing. I pick up so much knowledge from being around people and listening to what they have to say. I know this isn’t really an answer, but I would recommend to others that they take time to listen to what people have to say, as you can truly learn a lot that way.

What do you hope to be doing in 10 years?
The sky is the limit. There is so much untapped potential!

What was it like growing up in a small town like Ludlow, Mississippi?
You get the true understanding of country life whether it’s the farms or having to stay outside and play all day. You can’t beat it!

Why did you decide to start The Catch 22 Foundation?
I wanted to give back and let kids know that regardless of color or gender, they can do great things.

What is the one word you think best describes you?
A laid back, down to earth person.

Is there anything else people might be surprised to learn about you?
Well, I was Student Body President my senior year of high school, and Class President 9th – 11th grades. I was ranked 7th in my class when I graduated from Morton HS. I was really competitive in all areas of my life – not just in sports. I sang at Carnegie Hall with my school choir. I have travelled to 49 of the 50 United States. Growing up, my father was a truck driver and during the summers he would take me with him across the country. I added Hawaii to the list when I made it to the Pro Bowl!
